In July 2023, my net worth hit $0.
Doesn’t sound like something worth celebrating? For me it was huge.
In early 2020, I’d left my marriage and flown back to New Zealand with my toddler. All I had was a suitcase and enough money to buy food for our stopover during the flight.
Over the coming months, it dawned on me the difficulty that I was going to face in getting my life back on track.
I had student loan debt of around $35,000, plus the money I had borrowed from my parents for our flights home, and the money I had to pay back to Work and Income to get myself and my child into rented accommodation.
I felt hopeless and frightened, but I knew that I didn’t want this to be my future – or my child’s future. I had to find a way out of our current situation, but I didn’t know anything about budgeting let alone investing.
I started learning online about personal finance and slowly put in place the steps I needed to begin building financial freedom.
Today, I’m almost debt-free and my net worth is just under $30,000. Am I financially free yet? No, but I’m on the right track and I’m really passionate about sharing what I’ve learnt with other woman who may be in a similar situation to me.
I’ve set up this platform to inspire and empower you if you’re struggling to rebuild your life after divorce or financial abuse.
Even though I have many privileges that have helped me to get to where I am, I honestly believe that with the right knowledge and support, any one of us can recover our worth and create a better future for ourselves, leaving the chapter of financial hardship behind.
Believe me when I say that I know how hard this struggle is.
I want you to believe that you’re worth fighting for.
You deserve a wonderful life and you’re not alone.
We’ve always been worthy of love, respect and feeling safe - we need to remember it.
